Seattle Sounders Become First MLS Club to Win It All

The Seattle Sounders became the first club in MLS history to capture one of each trophy available in North American football, as a 3 - 0 victory over Inter Miami handed them their first Leagues Cup triumph.

Sounders played the game on home soil at Lumen Field, thrashing a star-studded Miami team to win the fifth edition of the competition.

Plenty of casual fans would have backed the Florida side coming into the game, largely because of the presence of the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. But they were the stars of Barcelona ten years ago, and Seattle have a team largely in its prime right about now.

Despite having less than a third of the possession (32% - 68%), the home side managed eleven shots on goal, an impressive seven of which were on target. Miami on the other hand didn't register a shot on target throughout the final, despite having ten attempts on goal.

Even though the game ended in chaos with something of a brawl on the pitch, there was no denying that the better team won the trophy.

Adding to the cabinet

Seattle's Leagues Cup title is their ninth major honour, but more notably it's the fifth different competition they've lifted, making Sounders the first side to win all five trophies available to MLS sides.

The first three successes for the west coast side came in the US Open Cup, which Sounders won in three consecutive years from 2009 to 2011.

They won the competition again in 2014, a year in which they also captured their only Supporters Shield title to date.

Two years later, Seattle won their first MLS Cup, an achievement they replicated again in 2019. Sounders then won the Champions League in 2022 before finally capturing the Leagues Cup this season.

Flawless Leagues Cup campaign

Seattle were the deserving champions of the Leagues Cup this season, having conceded just two goals in the entire tournament, none of which came in the knockout stages.

Sounders were just as effective at the other end of the pitch, netting 16 times in just six matches. Having learned important lessons against top class opposition at the Club World Cup in June, Seattle have become a competitive force in American football.

Since returning from Club World Cup action at the end of June, Sounders have lost just once, a 1 - 0 defeat to Minnesota United away from home two weeks ago.

This run of form has not only seen Seattle lift their first Leagues Cup title, but also fly up the MLS Western Conference table to fourth. Of course this puts Sounders in a play-off spot, but also builds confidence that they can have a deep run in the postseason, potentially leading to another piece of silverware at the end of an already historic season.
